Waukegan, IL 60085
“It’s Tournament Time!!!” The appraisers have been trained, millions of pounds of team snacks have been consumed, the props have found their way into the car, and the teams are about to descend on our tournament site to show off all the hard work they have put into their challenges. We hope the Regional Tournament will be a rewarding, fun-filled experience for everyone. If you have questions or problems throughout the day, please see Registration/ Information area or a DI Staff person for help. You will recognize us by our blue Incredible Illinois Aprons.
Key sources of information:
- www.illinoisdestinationimagination.org then follow links for Far North Regional tournaments.
- On this same page under “Resources” is the sign up for the most up to date communications by email via the Yahoo Group: ILDI Mail. Resource Coordinators, Team Managers, Parents, and other interested persons are welcome to subscribe. Please ensure you are signed up for this service.
Time:
The building will open on Saturday, March 13th at 7:00 AM for tournament officials only. The Challenge E team presenting at 8:45 may register at 7:30. For all other teams, the Registration Table opens at 8:00 AM. Sales and Information will be open throughout the day until after Closing Ceremony. Performances begin at 8:45 AM and will continue until 4:15 PM. Awards Ceremonies are planned to begin at 4:30 PM. However, that time is dependent upon score tabulation being complete for all challenges and the last Team Manager having their allotted 30 minutes to review the objective portions of the scores with their Challenge Master.

Please check the posted map to see where your team should enter the building and where they will perform.
It is permissible for parents to assist in bringing the sets and props into the building. Once the sets, etc. are in the building, no one but the team can put them together. After the performance, anyone is allowed to once again assist in removing the team’s belongings from the school. Save your Props, Costumes, and “stuff”! Your team may still move on to the next tournament, even if they are not in the top three places at the awards. The team or any team supporters should be sure to take all their belongings out of the prop areas immediately after the performance.
Registration/Check-in
Registration is located near the front main entrance which is also straight ahead from the main rear parking lot entrance. You will need to sign your team in before it competes in either the Team Challenge or Instant Challenge to verify tournament fees are paid (make checks out to Far North ILDI). Also pick up an informational packet with any updates and some “fun stuff”. Be sure to check all the materials in your packet for last minute tips and updates. Our goal is to have all teams checked in by NOON. To assist with traffic control, please have just one adult register your team(s).
Appraisers and Volunteers will Check-in at the Registration area.
Tournament Headquarters
Only Tournament officials and appraisers are allowed in the “Appraisers Lounge”. Also only authorized personnel are allowed in the “Score Room” and near the Instant Challenge exit area in the middle of the building.
Sales Table:
If you pre-ordered your ILDI State T-Shirt and/or pins this year, they will be pre-packaged for you at the sales table. The Sales table opens at 8:30 AM. The state shirts and pins feature our Creativity Makes Cents! theme this year. If you missed ordering the shirts and pins, don’t worry, additional shirts and pins will be available on a first come basis. Shirts are $12.00 each at the tournament. Be sure to check out the challenge pins too! There is a special pin each year for each challenge. The challenge pins are only $3.00 each. There are lots of other fun items available. Remember your DI day with fun pin or souvenir. A complete list of the items is on the web and has been sent separately. Cash or Checks only at the sales table and in the cafeteria.
Food and Refreshments
Proceeds from food sales will benefit our teams advancing to Global Finals. ALL food and drink is to be consumed in the cafeteria only. This year there are not quite enough tables for each team to have an assigned table, so please help us be sure there is room for ALL teams and supporters being good sports and sharing space throughout the day.
Other Activities
Please plan to stop by “DI Decoded” near the sales area and encourage team parents and guests to also visit. We’ll be offering valuable overviews of the Destination ImagiNation challenges, procedures, and scoring rubrics so all will be able to understand the day’s performances and processes. There will also be DI scrapbooks, literature, displays, information about DI summer camps, sponsorship opportunities.
We are also always happy to welcome back our own volunteer DJ, Ron Johnson of RJ’s Mobile Music (and great DI Dad!), who will be making music for us late in the afternoon.
Both team members and parents are invited to participate in an survey about DI. Check your registration packets and/or get forms from your Challenge area. Your participation is very helpful for requesting grant funds to support DI. Potential sponsors want to know what the benefits of doing DI are. We want you to tell us!
Parking:
The main lot behind the building will accommodate many teams and additional parking is also available on the streets. We encourage car pooling. Please obey the handicapped parking signs. Be considerate of the surrounding residential areas, and please do not block the prop drop off areas.
There will be volunteers assigned to "Traffic Control" who will instruct you to move your vehicle from any of the curbs or drop off areas if you are not timely in your unloading. Please remind your team supporters to allow extra time before the team’s performance to find a parking space and get to the challenge venue. Remember that doors to the performance venues are closed during the performances.
Driving Directions –please see separate map in Powerpoint site orientation below this letter or use other mapping software.
Team Challenge: It is strongly recommended that the teams read the 2010 “Travel Guide for Teams” which can be downloaded from the main DI webpage. This guide is a very accurate description of what will happen for your challenge the day of the tournament.
Be sure to have all of your paperwork. Tournament forms are in the back of each challenge and they tell you exactly which paperwork you need to have the day of the tournament. Computerized forms are available on the Illinois DI web site, under the “Resources” heading near the top of the page. Check out the whole site: www.illinoisdestinationimagination.org .These forms are easily filled in by the team and might make it easier for the appraisal teams to read your team’s information. Additional blank forms will be available at the Checker table near registration. There are no copy facilities for the teams to use at this school. Please plan accordingly.
Inside the building, teams and audience members have separate entrances for each challenge. Remember your set pieces must be able to fit through a standard household door. The shortest doors are 7 ft tall. The doors will close once the team is in place to begin. Doors will re-open after the challenge is completed. Please respect the door keepers, and enter only between performances.
Teams must check in with the prep area appraiser for their challenge a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes before their challenge. Breaking DI News teams have additional times to check in. All teams will have specific areas in the halls where they can prepare their challenge materials for presentation before check-in. There will be signs posted to tell you which section is for your challenge. Teams may use the restrooms near their challenge site for dressing and make-up, but be sure to bring your own tissues, towels etc for clean-ups after the presentation. All teams must also leave the presentation site clean for the next team. You will have just a few minutes after the Appraisers talk to the team to move everything out and clean up. Please move quickly, to keep the tournament on schedule. You’re Gonna Flip! teams must be sure that the tournament site is completely clean after their presentation. Your team and supporters may help clean, and you must bring your own supplies and devices to clean up any “art” that might get away and/or cover the floor.
The bathroom area is an especially important place to collect the team trash and place it in the garbagebag you are give and not let the trash containers overflow... Juarez has been wonderful to us in allowing the use of their school. We are expected to represent Destination ImagiNation well and to leave the school in excellent condition by picking up after ourselves.
Rising Stars teams will do their Instant Challenge and parents can observe. .
Except for in the Gym, the teams and audience members share entrances for each challenge.
Instant Challenge
All teams (except Rising Stars) should follow the signs and report to the 2ne floor (steps are near Registration) Instant Challenge (IC) hallway at least fifteen minutes prior to their scheduled time. They will be asked to turn in one copy of their completed Declaration of Independence form. Students need to be very quiet in the IC hallway areas so as not to disturb the teams performing. Teams will be escorted from the sign-in area to a “Warm Up” Room .
The team will be escorted to one of the Instant Challenge rooms. One Team Manager (TM) over the age of 18 may accompany the team, but that TM may not advise, signal or communicate with the team during this portion of the competition. The decision of whether the TM will accompany the team is made by the team members. The TM may not videotape or photograph the team, and must turn off all electronic devices like cell phones, etc.
Remind students that they must not discuss the challenge they receive with anyone else until ALL after Global Finals in late May. Remember that if the team is overheard or caught sharing any part of the IC with anyone, the team will be disqualified. PLEASE use the Chill Out Room provided to do any recap or team discussion of the IC - that is why it is there! Also be prepared to take a team photo!
Scores
Instant Challenge scores will not be revealed until after the Award Ceremony.
Team Managers: Each Challenge Master (CM) will release scores periodically throughout the day. Our goal is to have the door guard know when scores are available to be picked up from the Challenge Master. You will receive a copy of the Score Sheet once the individual appraiser scores are compiled by the Score Room and returned to the Challenge Master. This will tell you how many points the team received for each scored area of the Team Challenge, including the Side Trips, and lists any deductions your team may have received. Keep in mind that you won’t know how your team did in comparison to the other teams until the Awards are given out. Scores are considered final thirty minutes after you receive them. Talk with the Head Appraiser if you have a question about the Main Challenge score, but bear in mind that subjective scores are not subject to appeal- only objective ones. The most important thing to know about scoring is that we WANT to award your team points!
Score sheets will be posted shortly after Awards, but the complete results will be available on the www.illinoisdestinationimagination.org web pages under "Tournaments" as soon as possible. Information concerning weight ratios and other information that might give assistance to other teams, will be blocked until after Global Finals.
Closing Ceremonies:
Be aware that after the last Direct DIposit team, the gym will require set up and some general cleaning. We will make the Gym available as soon after as possible. While you’re waiting, stop by DI Decoded (see below) or at the Sales table for some last minute purchases or for final raffle entries. Then feel free to sing and dance along with our wonderful Waukegan DJ, Ron Johnson, of Rjs Mobile Music, who will be back to entertain the audience and announce raffle winners! Please help us to keep all the kids safe and plan to monitor your team’s and siblings behavior throughout the day. Please be sure to have an adult responsible for them while they’re in the gym.
We will start the Closing Ceremonies as promptly as possible, planned to start at 4:30 with acknowledgements, raffles, and Rising Stars will be the first teams recognized and will all receive medals. Then competitive medals and trophies are awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.Teams and Managers that are called should come up and receive their medals, and a trophy.
The teams that score the top three highest combined scores in each level, for Team Challenge and Instant Challenge, will qualify to compete at the Illinois Affiliate Finals Tournament on April 10, 2010 at Hadley Jr. High in Glen Ellyn IL. Team Managers for qualifying teams should be sure to collect an Affiliate Finals packet before leaving the Regional Tournament. Please check www.illinoisdestinationimagination.org for any last moment changes and additions. If you have any questions, please contact me at regionaldirector@farnorthdi.org
Good luck and congratulations to you and your team. We hope you’ll have a great, fun, and memorable tournament day!
