Two Waukegan Teams Advance to Destination ImagiNation Global Finals
Student teams from Little Fort Elementary School and Waukegan High School have advanced to the Destination ImagiNation (DI) Global Finals, following victories at a state-level competition on Saturday, April 10.
The Secret Identities team from Little Fort won the elementary division in the “DIrect DIposit” category. Team members include: Abigail Crombie, Bronte Beaudoin, Jacqueline Carlson, Nestor Padilla, Michael Rodriguez and
Bennett Zamble. For the competition, team members built a machine that could throw a Hacky Sack over a sixfoot wall, and hit targets on the opposite side.
At the secondary level, Waukegan High School’s Chewy Jones and the Return of Bubble Boy, took first place in the “You're Gonna Flip!” category. The competition was an acting challenge where teammates designed puppets and performed a skit where singer Michael Jackson is still alive, and he has joined a circus. Team members include: Lindsey Bennett, Danielle Cherry, Amber Dimitroff, Michelle Johnson, Wesley Layug and Taylor Spratt.
The two Waukegan teams bested several dozen teams from across the state to qualify for the Global Finals, which will be held May 26-29 on the campus of the University of Tennessee, in Knoxville. More than 1,000 teams from 49 states and 37 countries are expected to attend the four-day competition. Destination ImagiNation is a creative team competition that encourages students to use critical thinking and teamwork to solve problems and challenges. Teams compete in one of five categories: DIrect DIposit, DI Bot, You're Gonna Flip!, Do or DI and Breaking DI News.
Additional District 60 teams from Waukegan High School (3rd place, Breaking DI News, Secondary Level), Cooke Magnet School (5th place, Do or DI, Elementary Level) and Jefferson Middle School (7th place, Do or DI, Middle Level) also advanced to the state competition, but fell short of advancing to the Global Finals.
